What Is A Glass Filament Tape?
A glass filament tape or otherwise also known as a strapping tape is a pressure-sensitive tape that is used for several packaging functions such as closing corrugated fiberboard boxes, reinforcing packages, bundling items, pallet unitizing, etc. It is made of a backing material coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. The backing material commonly used is usually a polypropylene or polyester film with some fiberglass filaments, fiberglass strands or polyester filaments embedded into it to add high tensile strength. Kindly note that filament tapes with fiberglass filaments will always be stronger than those with polyester filaments. Invented by by Cyrus W. Bemmels, a scientist working for Johnson and Johnson in 1946, filament tape are strong tapes with some grades having as much as 600 pounds of tensile strength per inch width.
There are a huge variety of grades of filament tapes in the market; different types with different grades of adhesive and backing materials are also available. The grades and types of filament tapes to be used would be highly dependent on the applications. Therefore, it would be wise to check with the stores and try to get the correct types of filament tapes to suit your application.
These tapes can be applied manually with a stationary dispenser but is more often applied with a hand held tape dispenser which make is easier to use as this allows the user to more efficiently place the tape on the box, cut it off, and rub it down.
Automated machinery for application of tape to high speed lines is also commonly available in some hardware stores.
Features Of Filament Tapes
• Ultra tough & conformable
• Resistant to chemicals, oils
• Polyester reinforced with glass
• Acrylic thermosetting adhesive
Filament Tape is perfect for heavy duty applications such as a construction tape for easy winding of oil-filled transformers; bundling; covering; lead and saddle tie down.
